The European CE Standard

As of January 1, essentially all electronic devices sold in Europe must met compliance with the "CE" standards.

These quite complex rules limit the amount of RFI emission permitted by any digital device (as do the USA's FCC rules, thought the CE spec is tougher), and require that every product have a certain amount of immunity to electrostatic discharge.

Working with the US's Department of Commerce and other organizations, we've accumulated dozens of pounds of incomprehensible documentation but little insight into just how compliance is measured. Those companies selling certified equipment we talked to all turn their equipment over to a third party testing lab, letting these outside experts provide both the tests and design insight needed.

Is there a better way? A compliance cookbook? A set of design rules that maximize your chances of getting certified?

In the last 6 weeks alone a dozen confused developers have contacted us for information. Sadly, we have little to offer.

If you have experience or comments about CE certification, please email this list. We'll repost interesting comments for the benefit of everyone.
